Q. Can I take compulsory basic training on a large machine if I am over 21 and intend to take a direct access test?

YES.

TOP

Q. Can I use a foreign licence to take compulsory basic training?

No. You must either obtain a UK provisional, or, if you hold an EU licence, obtain a UK counterpart licence.

TOP

Q. Do all learner moped and motorcycle riders have to complete CBT?

If you passed a car test before 1 February 2001,then you do not need to complete CBT to ride a moped, but you DO have to take a CBT to ride a motorcycle.
However, if you passed your car test after 1 February 2001 and you wish to ride a moped or motorcycle you will need to complete CBT.

TOP

Q. Do I need to take a theory test?

UK licence holders

You will need to take a theory test if you want a licence for a new category of vehicle, e.g if you have a car licence and you want a motorcycle licence you will need to take a theory test. If however, you want to upgrade within a vehicle category you will not need to take a theory test, for example, if you have a full automatic car licence and you want a manual car licence you will not have to take a theory test.

Foreign licence holders
If you hold a full driving licence issued in the European Economic Area (EEA) you will not have to apply for a British driving licence. If you hold a full driving licence issued outside the EEA it may be possible to exchange it for an equivalent GB licence. You can contact the DVLA to find out if you can exchange your foreign licence. If you cannot exchange your foreign licence you will have to apply for a provisional licence and take a theory and practical test.
How long is the CBT certificate valid for?
Certificates issued since 1 February 2001 are valid for two years. However, if you passed a car test on or after 1 February 2001 you will receive moped entitlement on your licence, but will need to hold a valid CBT certificate on the date you passed your test or subsequently take CBT. In this instance your moped entitlement will be validated for your driving career.

Q. What will my examiner expect from me?

Your examiner will want you to drive safely and competently in various road and traffic conditions. The examiner will give you clear directions in good time, and will ask you to carry out set exercises.

TOP

Q. How long is the practical test for ?

Your examiner will require you to ride for approx 40 – 45 mins. During this time you will be asked to carry out specific manoeuvres which include:

Emergency Stop exercise

An emergency stop is given on every motorcycle test and can be given at any time during the test. You will be told the route to take and the examiner will demonstrate the signal that will be given.

Wheeling / Stand exercise

You will be asked to position the machine alongside the kerb and put it on its stand, then take the machine off the stand and wheel it across the road in a `U' turn. (Either a centre or side stand is acceptable, but a machine without a stand is not suitable for the purposes of the test).

U-Turn exercise

Via the radio, the examiner will ask you to ride the machine back across the road. You will be asked to move off from a parked position and to turn the machine around to face the opposite way, within the road width.

Slow ride exercise

If you have not had the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to control the machine at slow speed e.g. at junctions, you will be asked to ride as if in slow-moving traffic as a separate exercise.

After the practical part of the test you will be asked a question on `balance when carrying a passenger'. When the practical test is over, the examiner will tell you whether you passed or failed. You can request feedback on your test from the examiner, who will then go through your performance during the test.

TOP

Q. What happens if I fail the test ?

If you fail the test you should ask the examiner for some feedback to help prepare yourself for your next test. Your driving report form will also show you where you made any mistakes.
You must wait 10 clear working days after your practical test before you can book another one.
